I like to think of therapy as the emotional equivalent to cleaning out a room or piece of your house you may have avoided for years. Family and friends can often oversimplify your struggles i.e. "just get rid of everything already" or "that still bothers you"?
Working with a therapist is about providing a non-judgmental environment to help you formulate and achieve or modify your goals. Sometimes clients tell me they like to talk in therapy because once you discuss it with family or friends they may continue to bring it up or disclose to others etc. A therapist doesn't overlap with your daily life and that helps create a safe space on your journey.
